INGÉROP and the growth of water transport

An essential aspect of sustainable development is increased transport of goods by water. VNF has therefore assigned an overall budget of €20m. to improving the Rhone canal in the district of Carnon, near Montpellier. The development project covers a straight section of almost 8 km and a bend section.

The project management as well as the regulatory files and environmental monitoring were entrusted to a consortium including INGÉROP, FONDASOL and the landscape planner Lefur. The operation began in 2009 and is scheduled for completion in 2012.

The improvement of the section consists of enlarging the navigation rectangle and enhancing safety by creating widened areas and improving visibility on the bends.
The performance of this operation involved many environmental and economic issues, as well as technical constraints.

Ultimately, two solutions were considered for the design phase:
- Basic solution: stabilising the southern bank with rock-fill.
- Variant: stabilising the southern bank with sheet piles, reducing digging and rock-fill needs.

The chosen solution is the rock-fill solution by the DTP Terrassement group.
